Kyaingtong Hilltribes (4 days / 3 nights)

Day 1 …… / Kyaingtong

On arrival transfer to your hotel in Kyaing Tong . In the afternoon begin your exploration of the town’s historical attractions and exquisite monasteries: walk to Wat Pha Jao, Maha Myat Muni and Sun Taung. (see more information on Kyaingtong under ‘Kyaingtong’ in ‘Locations’). Delicious dinner at a local Chinese restaurant and overnight at Princess Hotel (standard room).

Day 2 Kyaingtong Trekking

Early morning start with coffee and tea and a picnic breakfast at the trailhead. Then embark on a full day’s trekking to very interesting and remote traditional villages of Lahu, Palaung, Kwe, Akha, and Aeng. Spend the whole day walking along steep forested tracks from village to village with a local expert [Good walking shoes and a good level of fitness are essential]. Evening return to Kyaingtong, and dinner in town at a local restaurant. Overnight at Princess Hotel.

Option : Visit the 5-days market, then trek to more easily accessible villages. Lahu, Palaung, Aeng, and Akha. In the afternoon take a short walk to some hot springs near to Kyaingtong town and again visit easily-accessible hill-tribe villages: Akhu and Wa.

Day 3 Kyaingtong Trekking

Early morning start with coffee and tea, and traditional breakfast at the 5-day market (different place each day for 5 days). Then drive, and trek again to remote hilltribes. Full day out in the mountains enjoying more villages and cool clean air. Evening return to Kyaingtong, and dinner in town at local restaurant. Overnight at Princess Hotel.

Option : Visit the 5-days market again and spend some time exploring the village, and surrounding paddy fields and meeting the people. Then return to Kyaingtong for a late lunch in a local restaurant. In the afternoon drive out on the road to Mong La to visit the La tribe and their character-full monastery full of young novices and Chinese prayer flags. En route stop at brick making factories and at splendid Chinese style monasteries and pagodas. Evening return to Kyaingtong, and dinner in town at a local restaurant. Overnight at Princess Hotel.

Day 4 Kyaingtong

Breakfast at the hotel. In the morning visit the water buffalo market, the Kyaingtong town market which draws all hill tribe folks from surrounding regions, and lacquer ware workshop making products different from the more usual Bagan style. After delicious Shan-Chinese lunch at a local restaurant downtown, transfer to the airport.

Options:

An early afternoon departure by air to Tachileik, Mandalay or Heho to continue your visit in Myanmar. Alternatively depart overland to Tachileik (exit to Thailand) or Mong La (exit to China).

Enter from Tachileik to Kyaingtong, then continue your visit in Myanmar is also possible.

Note: The best time to visit Kyaingtong is during the festival of the tribes. November, December and January.
